Great article. I long for the day when people stop yearning for victimhood. Whether you are a conservative or a liberal, man or woman, everyone is trying to proclaim victimhood status. Everyone is oppressed or suppressed or indoctrinated or controlled. The reality is that we live in the most free society in the history of the world. We literally choose our leaders and everyone acts like "they" are controlling us. Thank you for being a voice of reason in the wilderness.
Man that's so funny. Appreciate what you write. That article is definitely worthy of the attention that it is getting. Such a good explanation of what we are.
I’d noticed that your piece on sex is making the rounds again by the fact that people have been liking my comment I left on that piece a lot in the last week or so.
People love having something to complain about and that’s why they can’t just take the wins. As the list of things worth complaining about shrinks the demand for targets of ire exceeds supply and makes this whole dynamic more and more toxic. It’s mind boggling for people who are celebrated often just for existing to be mad about being suppressed or oppressed. That’s why it also has to be suppression by vague undefineable things (like the patriarchy) so you can move the goalposts again when further supply of ire is needed.
I was one of the people who commented on your previous post and, I understand what you're getting at with this but, I don't think you truly "get" why female sexuality is put on display like this... (and I wouldn't call it a celebration or applauding female sexuality, it's treating women like objects or animals, that's what we hear when we listen to those songs...). It is the goal of the "people in charge" to cheapen the bodies of both men and women so that we will easily hand them over when needed... to get vaccinations whenever is required, to fight in the military whenever they want another war, to put our fingerprints and face into a digital ID system. To keep us in "their" system. Look a little deeper into these "sexual movements", beyond men vs. women. Children are being affected. This is so much bigger than "Sabrina Carpenter's a woman and she's rich so she's not repressed". They are taking advantage of our animal nature to control us, and when AI girlfriends get introduced, the truly sex-obsessed men will hand themselves over to that system without even thinking. Everyone needs to wake up. I urge you to think "bigger" next time you write about these topics.
Well of course there are economic incentives at play here, and "the powers that be." Of course if you speak up about your sexuality, there will be someone somewhere who wants to weaponize it against you (either economically or morally). And sex robots definitely will ruin the lives of hundreds of thousands of men.
But none of that was the point of my post. Nobody is requiring men or women to publicly talk about their own sex lives. People can simply choose not to.
And if they choose to, they can also choose to simply ignore economic and social incentives and continue living their own lives the way they want to. If you publicly claim that sex robots sound cool, and then someone tries to sell you one, you can still choose not to buy it.
I don't think Sabrina Carpenter can choose to "not talk about her sex life" because 'contracts', and I don't think children who are shown this stuff from a young age get a chance to block it out of their psyche... this is why I'm saying you don't really understand the way the hollywood system works or why they push the over-sexualization of women in the first place. I guess if you don't know about this system you can't comment on it so I don't blame you, I guess... you should look into these things though if you're going to be writing about the role of sex in society...
Right now, at this very moment, you could start running for political office. If you have a compelling voice and a bit of luck, you could become one of those people in charge. And then millions of people would be writing about how YOU want to use their bodies for your system. The system is ours, it belongs to all of us. And each and every one of us has the freedom to decide if we want our bodies used or not. Most of us do want that, if the cause is noble. That's not tyranny, nor suppression.
I read your previous essay today (and commented), so I'm guessing substack is still pushing you.
Suppression is a great term. I know it's not what you intended, but while reading I thought it'd make for an interesting theme (because of the previous essay this one follows from) to explore how culture has suppressed male sexuality (porn is an obvious starting place, ie the male performance anxiety thing, but also how the various discourses on gender have mindfucked plenty of boys and girls about their expectations, which for instance makes us prone to seeking novel partners instead of improving/working with what we have). Recently I came across a podcast with an interesting guest who claimed that the sex in the relationship we're currently in should be the best we've ever had and if it's not, instead of bailing, we should be adults and seek to learn/practice to make it so, which sounds a lot more sensible than most advice doing the rounds these days! (But it takes two to tango, so if the counterpart isn't interested then maybe it's a sign that bailing out is a better option)
In terms of how you use "suppression" to distinguish in the opinions of commenters, I'd agree with you in so far as everyone feels positively about being socially validated, so even ideas which are clearly nonsensical, like the patriarchy 'suppresses' women today in the West, get supporters who all feel vindicated amongst themselves because they can blame an externality for their failures. Guys aren't immune from the same crap (ex. Incels), but men have a history of confronting themselves with self improvement (or else we starve). But I'm guessing this helps explain why those commenters on your previous essay feel vindicated if they received many likes (I read a few comments).
Great articles. This debate around men and women is great fun to watch for a gay guy. I learn so much! Glad I’m gay — seems way easier.
Sometimes I'm jealous

Knocked another one out of the park!

I'm plenty aware of how Hollywood works, thanks. But I think you and I are having two different conversations.
Yes.

I appreciate your sharing this. This is what I was trying to say, and it's always nice to hear a wife’s perspective.
Well good for you for building something new. No clowns allowed.
